Fishing Barkley Sound & Alberni Inlet, BC, Canada

Fishing Barkley Sound

The Barkley Sound - Alberni Inlet is one of British Columbia's outstanding fishing grounds with multiple Chinook salmon runs occurring from April on through into the summer months.

Accessible by road to the communities of Port Alberni (which claims the title "The Salmon Fishing Capital of the World" along with Campbell River), Ucluelet, and Bamfield, the Barkley Sound & Alberni Inlet area offers anglers an opportunity to reel in large springs over 30 lbs. from late March (on the offshore fishing banks) to early September.

Fishing Alberni Inlet

Alberni Inlet springs are present from late June through summer. While fishing for Bluebacks can occur as early as February around the Bamfield area of Barkley Sound , the best time for Coho of size starts in June and is best in late summer and early fall. Sockeye arrive in the area during May and will work their way into Alberni Inlet by late June. July and August can offer some absolutely spectacular salmon fishing in Alberni Inlet and is definitely worth a trip. Halibut, lingcod, and rockfish can also be excellent especially on the outside banks. (See Game Fish of BC)

A word of caution: fishing on the offshore banks outside of Alberni Inlet requires large seaworthy boats that can handle a big ground swell which is often present. Navigational aids such as a compass, GPS or radar as well as a VHF radio is advisable. Many charters and guides are available in the Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Bamfield areas.
