Visitors (Unique Hosts) Per Month

Since 1995, The BC Adventure Network has been British Columbia's undisputed leader in Internet tourism promotion. With over 5,500,000 (5.5 million) unique visitors per year, our monthly visitor stats far exceed those of the competition. Visitors average about 496,400 per month.

Unique Hosts (Visitors):
Each time a viewer connects to the Internet they do so through an IP address. The term unique hosts refers to the number of different IP addresses that visit the Web site over a given period. While this system of measurement is not perfect, it remains the most universally accepted and accurate method of tabulating visitors to a Web site.

For the record, because subscribers to dial-up Internet services share IP addresses, it is possible for multiple people to connect at different times through the same IP address, and it is also possible for the same person to connect at different times through a different IP address. However, the dramatic increase in Cable TV Internet subscriptions and DSL, where each user is assigned their own personal IP address, has had a positive effect on the accuracy of IP tracking. Ultimately it seems inevitable that every Internet user will have their own IP address, similar to a telephone number.

Hits vs Unique Hosts:
It's important to note that unique hosts is dramatically different than hits or requests. Hits or file requests refer to the number of files that are requested (downloaded and viewed) by the visitors computer as it opens and browses a Web page. Each page can be composed of dozens, even hundreds, of files. As a result, each visitor can tally up hundreds of hits (aka requests) as he/she travels from page to page in the Web site. While the number of hits may seem impressive, the term can be misleading. Statements like "Our site has over a million hits" or "We received over a million requests" may sound good, but they greatly exaggerate the Web sites audience and are much less reliable as a measurement of the number of visitors than the reporting of unique hosts.

Tracking Methodology:
Web stats are compiled from server log files. Interactive Broadcasting Corporation utilizes the industry leader, Web Trends, to compile and analyze its BC Adventure Network visitor data.
