Let your spirit soar with Bear Mountaineering & Burnie Glacier Chalet, near Smithers in the rugged mountains of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. This is where unparalleled mountain and ski experiences await you. Whether you are looking for demanding mountain experiences -- big alpine routes, bagging peaks and climbing steep ice -- or hoping to carve turns in deep powder and return to the warmth of a cozy chalet at night … your IFMGA guide and staff will be there for you.

Enjoy the best ski mountaineering that Canada has to offer, at the remote Burnie Glacier Chalet, with Bear Mountaineering. Our backcountry lodge is surrounded by incredible terrain for hikers, mountaineers and backcountry skiers. With access only by air, Burnie Glacier Chalet is truly a European-style mountain lodge surrounded by dazzling peaks … and because our operating area is non-motorized it's a peaceful wilderness experience.

Located in the Howson Range, near Smithers, in northern British Columbia, the area is also known as Tazdli Wiyez Bin, the place of rushing waters and will soon be one of B.C.'s newest parks. If places like the Stikine Ice-Cap or the massive and remote peaks of the Saint Elias Mountains are more your style, we will take you there too.

Explore some of the most rugged and little-explored mountains in British Columbia at the Burnie Glacier Chalet. Here you'll find deep powder with 1,700 metres (6,000 ft) of vertical, tree runs, long ascents over intricate glaciers. Winters can be exciting before the snow is deep enough to ski so why not learn the high-adrenaline sport of ice climbing. Frozen, blue waterfalls adorn the steep faces and gullies of our mountains in the cold seasons. Learn in a weekend with all ice climbing gear supplied. We can also provide you with Avalanche Training. Your instructor has guided and trained mountaineers for 20 years, taught mountain guides and avalanche professionals, and developed snow avalanche control programs for government and industry.

During the spring and summer immerse yourself in a naturalist's paradise. When the mountain meadows and rocky slopes of the Howson Range are carpeted with wildflowers, their riotous colours add life to a majestic landscape of dark rock and blue ice. Caribou, grizzly bears, marmots, mountain goats and wolverine are at home in these mountains. We'll tread carefully among them respecting their place … and at night, the warm and comfortable Burnie Glacier Chalet invites us in.

Burnie Glacier Chalet offers all the charm of a European mountain hut, but instead of sharing it with hundreds, the beautiful post and beam lodge which sleeps eleven is exclusively yours. In the evenings guests gather around a hand-crafted dining table, while wood crackles in the cook stove and dinner simmers on top. A sauna will keep you clean and relaxed. Come join us and let your spirit soar with Bear Mountaineering and the Burnie Glacier Chalet.
